How to Update Your Fiscal Address in Portugal as a Foreign Citizen

2026 Guide

If you’re a foreign citizen living in Portugal, updating your fiscal address (morada fiscal) with the Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira (AT) is a key step to ensure you’re in compliance with Portuguese tax law and receive all relevant tax communications.

This guide explains how to update your fiscal address on the Portal das Finanças after your initial registration with a foreign address—and what to do once your new Portuguese address is entered.

Why Is It Important to Update Your Fiscal Address?

If you’ve moved from your home country to Portugal or changed your address within Portugal, it’s crucial to update your NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) record. Keeping your fiscal address up to date helps you:

  • Receive tax notifications and correspondence from AT
  • Access public services, healthcare, and legal residency rights
  • Eliminate the need for a tax representative, saving money
  • Avoid fines or administrative issues

Where and How to Update Your Fiscal Address

You can update your address online via the Portal das Finanças, but it’s a two-step verification process.

Step 1: Log In to the Portal das Finanças

Log in using your NIF and senha (password). If you don’t have an online account yet, you can register here (in Portuguese).

Step 2: Go to the Search Box: Type in Morada

  1. Go to:
Morada > Aceder>Entregar Pedido de Alteração
Make sure “Portugal” is selected under “Nova Morada”
Press the button on the bottom right “seguinte”
  2. Enter your new Portuguese zip code and press “seguinte”
  3. Then enter:
    • Street name and number
    • Floor or apartment number (if applicable)
    • Postal code and locality (double check correctness)
  4. Check the box and press “submeter”

Step 3: Wait for the Confirmation Code by Mail

This is the most critical step.

After submitting your address, the Tax Authority will mail a verification code (código de validação) to your new address via registered post.

  • This code typically arrives within 5–10 business days
  • You must enter it in the Portal das Finanças to validate the address

Step 4: Enter the Code to Confirm the Address

Once you receive the letter:

  1. Return to the Portal das Finanças
  2. Search “Confirmar Morada” section (press aceder)
  3. Enter the code exactly as printed

Only after this step will your fiscal address be officially updated.

Please note the codes do expire, so keep an eye on the mailbox and enter the code as soon as received.

What Happens After Confirmation?

  • Your address will be officially linked to your NIF
  • If you previously had a fiscal representative (because your address was outside Portugal), you cannot update your address this way. You must request it and provide paperwork through the e-balcao and officially request it moved from your home country to Portugal, when it is the first request. After your tax residency is moved to Portugal, this is how you will update it as you move within Portugal.

Important Tips

  • If the code doesn’t arrive, you can resend the request through the portal
  • This process can only be completed by you or a legal representative
  • You can now request the certificate of tax domicile from the Portal and submit to AIMA to keep your address updated.
