D7 Overview

Due Diligence, Pre-Application and Post Approval Support, and Everything in Between

We merge our deep expertise and experience with a fresh perspective for each new client’s circumstances, allowing us to uncover and deliver the most effective solutions to achieve a successful immigration and relocation outcome. In a country with ever-evolving laws and processes, the best solutions during quick change are rarely the most obvious—they require fresh thinking, adaptability, and a willingness to look beyond the familiar.

Due Diligence
Leading with Honesty...

At Waypoint, our starting point with clients is always a consultation call. Why is this so important? We have seen hundreds of different scenarios – there is no one-size-fits-all approach to immigration and relocation. However, during the consultation, we can determine the strength of the application by assessing three main parts of the application that matter most: Finances, Criminal Report, and Housing. We can also assess your timelines and any special circumstances to be factored into your move to make is seamless and convenient for you.

Tax Exposure
And the Correct Advice

Our next step with clients is a mandatory tax consultation. In the past two years, the favourable tax benefits for foreigners have been eliminated, and the new regime is much more tedious and difficult to obtain. Its application also excludes those with passive income and those who are retired. It is crucial to understand your tax exposure upon relocating to Portugal and becoming a tax resident. This should always happen before starting any process so that you are comfortable moving forward.

Common FAQs

Most Common Questions:

How are the D7 and D8 visa different?

The D7 is for passive income, all income derived from pensions, royalties, dividends, capital gains, rental income, etc., not from employment. The D8 is for those who are actively working with a work contract, registered self-employment, or who own their own company. If you have any form of employment, it will always trump the D7 visa as the type of visa you should apply for.

The financial requirements for Portugal’s D7 visa revolve around demonstrating consistent passive income, not employmentSpecifically, applicants must show a regular, stable, and legally sourced passive income of €1,500 per month and have €12,000 available in a Portuguese bank account.  Yes, others will tell you that the official value per month is €870 or €10,440 annually, but at this time, no one can survive on these values in Portugal. Therefore, the immigration authority will not see your application as safe, or without the possibility of needed financial assistance while in Portugal. This is why we have different minimal values.

Additional values for spouse and children are as follows: 50% of the above individual value, and 30% of the value above for each child/dependent. Example: Family of 4 total €3,150 per month, and €30,000 available in a Portuguese bank account.

Yes. You must submit at the time of the first application and the final AIMA appointment, evidence as required by AIMA* of a 12+ month rental contract or a CPCV (Promissory Note) for purchase of a home. You cannot submit a letter from a friend, Airbnb short-term rental, hotel booking, etc.

It does not entirely rule you out for immigration. It depends on the nature and seriousness of the crime and can be evaluated by our legal team during a consultation.

Our payment terms are simple: 50% deposit to begin services and 50% final payment upon the visa decision by the consulate. We do offer access to Klarna for those who prefer to break payments down further.

Pricing

*Please note that if we can invoice a non-Portuguese company (LLC, etc.), the VAT is exempted. The VAT rate in Portugal is 23%. Payment terms are 50% deposit to begin services. We offer Klarna for those who want to make further payments.
